The Monarchy

The Kingdom of Ansonia is described in the Constitution as a "free, democratic and federal parliamentary monarchy". The monarch is the Head of State but exercises mostly ceremonial and formal functions. His two real decision-making functions are to appoint a Prime Minister or provincial Chief Minister if the Congress or relevant Provincial Assembly has failed to nominate one, and to decide whether or not to refer bills to the Supreme Court to rule on their constitutional validity. Even these powers have to be exercised with the advice of the Council of State.

The Crown is hereditary and vested in the descendants of the late Robert Tremarthy, father of the present king, according to the principle of absolute primogeniture (eldest-line descent with no preference for male over female). If the entire issue of Robert Tremarthy should die out, the Speaker of the Senate would become Acting Head of State while Parliament chooses a new monarch.

The King

The full official title of the monarch is His Majesty Edward the Fifth, by the Grace of God King and Protector of the Liberties of Ansonia. He is the current heir of King Edward IV of Cerbay-Ansonia (reigned 254-239 AP).

Edward David Tremarthy was born in Mallaton, Gatheny, on 24th May 265. His father, Robert, was a political activist who fought for democracy and human rights within the Gronk Empire. Edward became an academic historian and political writer who eventually came to support the idea of independence for Ansonia. He was an early supporter of the Ansonia Provisional Authority, but fell out with them during the War of Independence over Cornelius Marange's increasingly autocratic style of government. He narrowly avoided being arrested in late 301 by obtaining a temporary university appointment in Somery.

After the fall of the Ansonian Federation in 302, many members of the Provisional Democratic Government favoured a constitutional monarchy but wanted to move away from the House of Agron, which was too closely associated both with the Federation and the earlier Gronk regimes. Their proposal that the throne should be offered to a representative of the old Cerbay-Ansonia royal house received popular support, and was approved by referendum in October 302. Edward was inaugurated as king on 16 November.

In 286, Edward married another academic, Dr Angela Forley (now Queen Angela). The couple have three children.

Other members of the Royal Family

The Royal Family of Ansonia is a legally-recognized entity consisting of the monarch and his or her spouse, children and siblings, along with the children of those in the senior line of descent from the monarch (i.e. children of the eldest child, of the eldest child's eldest child etc).

History of the monarchy

In the century before the Gronk Conquest (296-198 BP), Ansonia was divided into two rival kingdoms, known to history as as Agron-Ansonia (officially The Kingdom of the Ansonians) and Cerbay-Ansonia (officially The Kingdom of Ansonia). After the Gronk Conquest, the client kings and dukes of Gronkian Ansonia came from the House of Agron and its cadet branch, the House of Conarsy.
